Elul
Elul has been interpreted as an acronym, with its Hebrew letters ‘Aleph’ ‘Lamed’ ‘Vav’ representing the words Ani L’Dodi V’dodi Li, meaning “I am my Beloved’s and my Beloved’s is mine.” In this context “my Beloved’s” refers to God and “I am” the Jewish people.According to the Bible, (Bamidbar 14:37) on the 17th day of Elul the spies who gave the tragic and catastrophic report about Eretz Israel died. Rabbi Elazar, son of Parta, said: “Come and see how great is the negative power of evil speech and consequently the greatness of the punishment it brings.” We learn this lesson from the spies who slandered only trees and stones, (the land of Israel.) How much worse is the punishment if someone slanders a human being. Elul is not just a time to begin the process of cleansing, but also to ask forgiveness for wrongs done to other people.
Mezuzah Sale
In addition, Elul is a time when many people check their mezuzot and tefillin for defects that might render them invalid. While you are checking you may want to change the mezuzah case. This month Etz-Ron has a number of Mezuzah cases on sale . In addition, you can see a wide selection of mezuzah cases in the Etz-Ron Mezuzah Gallery .
Tradition
According to tradition, the month of Elul is the time that Moses spent on Mount Sinai preparing the second set of tablets after the incident of the golden calf. He ascended the mount on Rosh Chodesh Elul and descended on the Tishri 10th, at the end of Yom Kippur, when repentance was complete.Other sources claim that Elul is the beginning of a period of forty days when Moses prayed to God to forgive the people after the golden calf incident, after which the commandment to prepare the second set of tablets was given.
