Mar Cheshvan
Why Mar Cheshvan?
The month of Cheshvan is often referred to as mar Cheshvan, “bitter” Cheshvan, as the month contains no holy days and because it sometimes coincides with the arrival of colder weather. Mar can also mean a drop of water. The period marks the beginning of the great flood during the time of Noah. However, we can also think of Cheshvan as a quiet time to reap the benefits of the spiritual growth from the preceding month of Tishri. Cheshvan is also a time to commemorate the memory of many important women in Jewish history and an appropriate occasion to buy gifts for Jewish women for their personal use.
